In 1924 aged 21, Dillinger was jailed for a botched grocery robbery. Serving nearly a decade alongside seasoned bank robbers, turning him from a minor offender into a master criminal.
Released in 1933, Dillinger’s notorious gang robbed over a dozen banks. With the financial system widely blamed for the Great Depression, his charm and habit of burning mortgage records made him a cult hero.
In March 1934, Locked up in the “escape-proof” Crown Point Jail, Dillinger carved a fake pistol out of a wooden washboard and stained it black with shoe polish. He used it to hold up guards, break out, and drive off in the county sheriff’s brand-new Ford V8 police car. Stealing the sheriff’s car triggered federal law. Dillinger was named America’s first Public Enemy No. 1, becoming the target of a national manhunt.
In July 1934, tipped off by an insider, FBI agents ambushed Dillinger as he walked out of Chicago’s Biograph Theater after watching a crime movie, he was shot in a nearby alley, he died at just 31.
